Tunbridge Wells Odeon is part of Odeon Cinemas, with the parents company being Terra Firma Capital Partners, are a British chain of cinemas, being one of the largest in Europe and is owned by Odeon and UCI Cinemas Group.

History:

Odeon Cinemas was created in 1928 by a man called Oscar Deutsch, with the name ‘ODEON’ being derived from his motto ‘Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation’. But, the company is most associated with J Arthur Rank, who was the owner for the longest period to record.

The first Odeon cinema was opened by Oscar Deutsch, in Brierley Hill, West midlands beck in 1928.

After eight years of being around, the ‘Odeon’ was a household name and the cinemas were know and recognised for their maritime-inspired Art Deco architecture. It was first used in the 1930’s in Birmingham, bough to expand the chain. He liked the style a lot that he commissioned the architect to design his future buildings. Ken’s first Odeon was opened in 1934, but unfortunately closed in 1960.

Deutsch died in 1941, and from the first building to his death, managed to get 258 Odeons opened throughout Britain. The firms and brand name then expanded into Canada, under J. Arthur Rank Corporation, with the head office being inn Toronto, Ontario.

It was an aim that each Odeon would have a different characteristic in the United Kingdom, often having a unique and different interior.

Today:

The company has undergone a series of sales, firstly in 2000 where Odeon merged with Cinven’s ABC chain and then to a group in 2003 to private investors. Terra Firma purchased this chain in 2004 where it then merged with United Cinemas International to be and produce the largest cinema chain throughout the whole of Europe. As a condition of this merger, a few Odeon cinemas had to be sold in Britain and others were closed down to keep the market share within respectable limits and the competition commission to remain happy and satisfied.
